Agarwood,
or Gaharu, is a precious commodity found only in the Aquilaria
trees native to Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand,
Cambodia, Indonesia, China and Malaysia. It is arguably
the most expensive wood in the world today, fetching prices
of over USD10,000.00 / kg for premium quality yields cultivated
from natural forests, and fuelled by increasing demand coupled
with falling supply.
Despite the lucrative
nature and high demands from countries as diverse as Taiwan,
Japan and the Middle East, Agarwood farming remains a relatively
little-known and under-developed sector in Malaysia.
